How I Swapped Hedge Funds for Happily Ever After: The Unconventional Rise of Kim Swizz

Kim Swizz never imagined she'd trade the precision of tax law for the poetic nuances of romance novels. Yet today, she's celebrating the launch of her second book, In the Stars Rewritten, part of a beloved interconnected standalone series. Her dramatic pivot from big-law attorney to bestselling author is nothing short of inspiring.

Originally from Arizona, Kim studied finance and business law before moving to Boston in 2013 for law school. She quickly found herself immersed in the demanding world of private equity and hedge funds as a tax attorney. However, despite her success, Kim recognized an undeniable truth: she wasn't passionate about law. She'd always dreamed of something different, something she'd carried quietly since childhood—becoming an author.

In the summer of 2022, she decided to take the leap. Leaving behind her prestigious law career, Kim embraced uncertainty and followed her lifelong passion. Initially, she reconnected with her love of reading, particularly romance novels. "I dove back in once I left law," Kim says, "and couldn't get enough." This rekindled passion soon ignited a desire to write her own stories.

Embarking on a new chapter in her life meant not only writing but also learning the intricacies of independent publishing. With no publisher or marketing team behind her, Kim faced a steep learning curve. From securing ISBNs and barcodes to navigating editors and building her online presence, Kim tackled each new challenge with relentless determination.

"There's so much more to being an independent author than just writing," Kim explains. Social media marketing, website development, newsletters—each task required her attention and time. She humorously describes TikTok as a "post and pray" situation, underscoring both its unpredictability and its power in propelling independent authors to success.

Her disciplined approach, rooted in her legal training, has been instrumental. "Either you write it or you fail," she says firmly, noting her refusal to ever request an extension. Kim emphasizes the importance of persistence, stating that "sometimes it means editing a chapter seventeen times." Her commitment has undoubtedly paid off.

What Kim is wearing: Oversized Beige Velvet Blazer

At her Boston launch event, Kim stunned in a ADLH's tailored velvet blazer, showcasing a sleek statement blazer silhouette that set the tone for the evening. The plush velvet jacket complemented her elegance on stage, and this luxury velvet outerwear piece quickly became a topic of conversation among attendees. By choosing a velvet blazer in beige, she blended fashion-forward style with her personal brand—an ideal example of how a romance author can make a memorable entrance.

Today, Kim Swizz stands as proof that it’s never too late to rewrite your own story. She continues to inspire many to pursue their passions, demonstrating that sometimes the biggest career risk can lead to the greatest reward. Her story is not just about finding success in publishing; it’s about having the courage to chase joy, wherever it leads.
